Multimedia and the Living Home Project
Leanne Elias, Instructor, Multimedia Production
In the fall of 2007 I was approached by Braum Barber about having my 2nd Year students get involved in the creation of a logo for his PEEQ project. Working for an actual client is a great opportunity for students, so I agreed right away.
Students began their challenge by reading a Proposal for Project Visuals which Braum and his team had prepared for us. It outlined what the project was and where the visual would be used. While it gave a good overview of the project, we needed to drill down a bit more to give students a solid understanding of what really needed to be communicated in the logo.
Some of our work was done for us by the Web Development team. In order for them to start work on the template, they had met with Braum to discuss the look and feel of the site. The team built the color palette based on things that came out of that meeting, and they passed that on to us. Meeting with Braum and this Web team together answered even more of our questions. The students were now armed with several keywords that they read or heard, and were anxious to get going. One of the lingering challenges was that there was no decision made on the final name for the project, so everyone steered clear of having a purely typographic response.
Students spent the next week brainstorming, developing sketches, and then refining their best ideas. At the end of the week we invited the project team in to view the preliminary results and discuss problem areas and changes. It was a great opportunity for the class to hear how others were interpreting their work! This was also the first time the students heard the final name of the Living Home, and they could now think about the treatment of the type.
We took a few more days to implement the changes and clean up all entries, and then students submitted both a color and greyscale version of their work, along with a short defense (or explanation).
It was a really rewarding experience for all of us, and I’m grateful to all of the partners who gave up their time to help the students through.
