Braum Barber, Instructor, School of Engineering Technologies

The Engineering Design & Drafting Technology students enrolled in Properties of Engineering Materials (ENF155) submitted a research paper investigating different materials used in residential construction.

The research was to include a description of the material, the performance of the material, and an estimated embodied energy & pollution for the material. The results were compiled in a table presented under Design Notes and decisions were made for the materials to be used in The Living Home.

The following papers are those submitted by these students. We appreciate the effort these students made in their research, and the recommendations made with the information available to them. These papers were not revised after submission, and may include factual errors – please verify information from other sources before using these papers in any further research efforts or promotion.

The students were very engaged in the research and motivated by the fact that their recommendations would be used in the construction of The Living Home. We all learned about the complexity of life-cycle analysis and the difficulty of comparing apples with oranges to achieve a final recommendation.
